When a tree came down on part of this Baroda, MI ranch home, it damaged part of the roof along with the soffit, fascia, and a section of gutter in that area. Dennison Roofing & Gutter Toppers put it all back together with a complete roof replacement, soffit and fascia repairs, a new gutter section, and Gutter Topper gutter protection. The homeowners chose CertainTeed NorthGate shingles in Georgetown Gray, a cool gray blend that looks crisp over the light siding and gives this long, low hip roof a clean, dimensional look from the street.
Repairing the Tree Damage
The tree hit along one stretch of the eave. Our crew opened up that area and repaired and replaced about 30 feet of damaged soffit and fascia, so the eave is solid and finished again. We also replaced the 30-foot section of gutter the tree damaged with new 5″ Almond seamless gutter to match the rest of the system. With the eave repaired, the new roof, gutter, and Gutter Topper all tie in cleanly along that side of the house.
A CertainTeed NorthGate Roof in Georgetown Gray
Along with those repairs, we replaced the entire roof: 29 squares covering the house and the attached two-car garage. NorthGate is built with our northern climate in mind, and Georgetown Gray gives all of those hips and ridgelines a sharp look from the ground and from above. Matching Georgetown Gray hip and ridge caps complete the look.
The CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System
Every roof we install is built as a CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System, and this one is no exception. That means 5½ ft of WinterGuard ice and water shield at all eave edges and around all roof penetrations, with RoofRunner synthetic underlayment over the balance of the roof deck. WinterGuard protects the areas most likely to see ice dams and wind-driven rain, while RoofRunner gives the rest of the deck a strong, reliable layer of protection under the shingles.
Why We Did a Partial Redeck
CertainTeed requires WinterGuard to go over a clean, dry roof deck, never on top of old roofing material. When the old roof came off, the old ice and water shield was still bonded to sections of the decking, and it cannot be scraped off cleanly. So our crew did a partial redeck, removing and replacing the decking where the old ice and water shield had been installed and anywhere else the wood needed it. That gives the new WinterGuard and shingles a solid, flat surface to bond and fasten to, which is exactly what CertainTeed calls for.
Ventilation, Flashing, and Finishing Details
A roof only performs as well as its details. We removed the old roof vents, covered the openings, and installed CertainTeed ridge vent along the ridgelines to help the attic release heat and moisture. The attic insulation was adjusted to keep proper airflow just below the roof deck, and a new vent with a damper was installed. The chimney got a new flashing kit to shed water around one of the most leak-prone spots on any roof, the plumbing vents got new pipe boots, and new T-metal drip edge finishes the roof edges.
A Full Tune-Up for the Existing Gutters
Outside the damaged section, we kept the existing gutters and gave them a full tune-up before any covers went on: we cleaned out the gutters and downspouts, repitched the gutters where needed for proper water flow, and resealed any leaking seams the homeowner pointed out. That gets the whole system clean, draining correctly, and sealed at the problem spots.
225 Feet of Charcoal Gutter Topper
We finished the job with 225 feet of Gutter Topper in Charcoal, wrapping the eaves all the way around the house and garage, over both the existing gutters and the new section. Gutter Topper is a patented, heavy-duty .024 aluminum gutter cover. Its rounded nose uses surface tension to guide rainwater into the gutter, while leaves and debris slide off and fall to the ground. It also includes a patented Ice Release System to help move ice off the roof and gutter system, and it comes with a lifetime, transferable warranty.
Gutter Topper, Solution, Needle Guard and Leaf Terminator are the only gutter protection products to pass 2 independent tests for not clogging, handling torrential rain, withstanding 110 mph winds, and handling heavy ice and snow loads of 1,200 lbs per square foot. Gutter Topper was also rated the #1 solid metal gutter cover by a leading consumer testing magazine. For these homeowners, that means no more ladder days for gutter cleaning.
