This Berrien Springs, MI homeowner needed a roof replacement and wanted to stop cleaning gutters for good. The roof was more than 20 years old, a storm had damaged a corner of the gutters, and ice built up along the front of the house in winter. Dennison Roofing & Gutter Toppers handled the whole job: a new CertainTeed roof with better attic ventilation, Heat Deflector Insulation, new seamless gutters, and Gutter Topper gutter guards, plus a matching new roof on the backyard shed.

Roof Replacement in Berrien Springs, MI: The CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System

We tore off the old roof and installed a CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System in NorthGate shingles, color Driftwood. NorthGate shingles carry a Class 4 hail rating and a 130 mph wind warranty, and this roof is backed by a CertainTeed Lifetime Labor & Material Shingle Warranty with a 50-year SureStart period. On this low-pitch (3/12) roof, every layer matters:

5½ ft WinterGuard at the eaves and around every penetration (chimney, vents, and soil pipes), where ice dams and leaks start
RoofRunner synthetic underlayment on the balance of the roof
Almond drip edge at the roof edges
New chimney flashing and new soil pipe boots

A Partial Redeck for a Solid Base

After the tear-off, our crew inspected the old board decking. The damaged sections were replaced with new 4′ x 8′ OSB sheets, so the new underlayment and shingles have a clean, solid base to nail into. The rest of the decking was sound and stayed in place.

Better Attic Ventilation: Ridge Vent and Soffit Vents

A roof only lasts as long as the attic can breathe. We removed the old static vents and covered the openings, then installed CertainTeed ridge vent along the peak so hot, moist air can escape. To bring fresh air in, we added 3 new 16″ x 8″ soffit vents on the front porch soffit, and we adjusted the attic insulation so it doesn’t block airflow from the soffits.

Heat Deflector Insulation for Lower Energy Bills

While we were in the attic, we installed Heat Deflector Insulation. It comes in 4 ft wide, 700 sq ft rolls that are laid over the existing attic insulation with about a 1 inch overlap. Using NASA space technology, it deflects 97% of radiant heat in the summer and reflects furnace heat back into the home in the winter. Department of Energy studies show 25–45% utility savings.

New Seamless Gutters and Gutter Topper Gutter Guards

We removed the old gutters, including the storm-damaged corner, and installed 140 ft of new Light Bronze seamless gutters with Almond downspouts. On top went 140 ft of Light Bronze Gutter Topper in 5 ft panels. We always choose the Gutter Topper color that most closely matches the roof shingles, and Light Bronze was the best match for the Driftwood shingles.

Gutter Topper was rated the #1 solid metal gutter cover by a leading consumer testing magazine.
Gutter Topper, Solution, Needle Guard, and Leaf Terminator are the only gutter protection products to pass 2 independent tests: no clogging, torrential rain, 110 mph winds, and 1,200 lbs per sq ft of ice and snow load.
The full Gutter Topper line is the only gutter cover certified by roofing manufacturers not to harm or void their warranty, which matters on a brand-new roof.

Trim Repair and a New Shed Roof

We replaced the rotted wood trim, including the trim above the back door, with composite boards that won’t rot, and rebuilt the curved section of trim with new wood. We also replaced a ledger board on the back garage roof. The backyard shed got a new roof in the same NorthGate Driftwood shingles, so it matches the house.

Benefits for the homeowner:

A new CertainTeed roof with WinterGuard protection where leaks and ice dams start
A cooler attic in summer and lower energy bills all year
No more climbing ladders to clean gutters
Rainwater carried away from the foundation and landscaping
Gutter covers color-matched to the roof
A gutter cover that won’t harm or void the roof warranty
