This Stevensville, MI ranch home is ready for many more Michigan winters with a complete roof replacement, new seamless gutters, and Gutter Topper gutter protection from Dennison Roofing & Gutter Toppers. The homeowners chose CertainTeed NorthGate shingles in Weathered Wood, a soft blend of grays and browns that looks right at home against the red brick and the mature shade trees around the property.
A CertainTeed NorthGate Roof for a Sprawling Ranch
This was a 51-square roof replacement on a single-story ranch with plenty of hips, valleys, and roof sections, two brick chimneys, and a garage cupola. NorthGate is built with our northern climate in mind, and Weathered Wood gives all of those rooflines a rich, dimensional look from the street and from above. Matching Weathered Wood hip and ridge caps complete the look.
The CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System
Every roof we install is built as a CertainTeed Integrity Roofing System, and this one is no exception. That means 5½ ft of WinterGuard ice and water shield at all eave edges and around all roof penetrations, with RoofRunner synthetic underlayment over the balance of the roof deck. WinterGuard protects the areas most likely to see ice dams and wind-driven rain, while RoofRunner gives the rest of the deck a strong, reliable layer of protection under the shingles.
Why We Did a Partial Redeck
CertainTeed requires WinterGuard to go over a clean, dry roof deck, never on top of old roofing material. Once the old roof was torn off, our crew checked the decking and did a partial redeck, installing new decking in the areas where it was needed. That gives the ice and water shield and the new shingles a solid, flat surface to bond and fasten to, which is exactly what CertainTeed calls for.
Ventilation, Flashing, and Finishing Details
A roof only performs as well as its details. We removed the old static and power vents and covered those openings, then installed CertainTeed ridge vent along the ridgelines to help the attic release heat and moisture. Insulation was adjusted where needed to keep proper airflow just below the roof deck, and new vents with dampers were installed in Weathered Wood to match the shingles.
At both chimneys we installed a new saddle and a new chimney flashing kit, along with new step flashing, to shed water around some of the most leak-prone spots on any roof. The plumbing vents got new pipe boots, with the soil pipes painted to blend in with the Weathered Wood shingles. Almond drip edge finishes the roof edges, matched to the fascia as closely as possible.
New Seamless Gutters with Gutter Topper
With the new roof in place, we finished the job with 220 feet of new seamless gutters in Almond, topped with Gutter Topper in Light Bronze. Gutter Topper keeps leaves and debris from the big trees on this lot out of the gutters, so rainwater keeps flowing where it should. We also added two new 3″ x 4″ downspouts on the front gutter at the front entry area to move water away from the house.
